Founded in 1679 by the then govender of the Cape Colony Simon Van Der Stel on the banks of The Eerste Rivier. During 1690 French Huguenot viticultural refugees settled in Stellenbosch and immediately planted grapes in the fertile valleys around Stellenbosch making it the centre of the South African Wine Industry. Stellenbosch has the largest number of wine estates in the Western Cape and created what is known as the Stellenbosch wine route. Establish in 1971 by Frans Malan from Simonsig , Spatz Sperling from Delheim and Neil Joubert from Spier Wine Estate.
